Prayer for work and for family abroad

For the interview on Monday, the visa that has taken fourteen months, the contract in Dubai that ends in March, the ones we love who are working far away. A prayer for the one leaving and the ones staying.

For work that lets you stay

Many petitions on the wall ask for the same thing in different words: work that lets a father come home, a mother stay with her children, a nurse serve in her own country. It is a prayer about a job, but it is really a prayer about a family.

For those working abroad

Ten million Filipinos work away from home. If you are one of them, or waiting for one, pray this at the hour when you both know the other is awake. The distance is real, and so is the prayer that crosses it.

A prayer you can say

A prayer for work

Lord, you worked with your hands and you know what a day of labor is worth. Give me work that feeds my family and keeps my dignity. Open a door this month, and give me the courage to walk through it.

While I wait, keep me from despair, and let me be generous to those waiting beside me. Amen.

For someone working abroad

Lord, (name) is far from home tonight, in (city). Keep them safe on the road and at work. Let their employer be fair and their sleep be sound. Send them a friend who speaks our language.

Bring them home at the end of the contract, and bring us through the months until then. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Name the specific thing: the interview date, the visa, the contract, the city.
  2. Say the prayer that fits, once a day, at a time you can keep.
  3. On the wall, the work petitions gather candles from people in the same wait.
  4. When the door opens, come back and give thanks, so the next person waiting can take heart.
