Prayer of thanksgiving
The biopsy was benign. The visa came through. He came home clean on his birthday. When a prayer is answered, this is how to say thank you, and how to tell the people who prayed it with you.
Tell the people who prayed
At the Wednesday novena in Baclaran, letters of thanks are read aloud so that others waiting can take heart. Do the same. If people prayed for you, at church, in a group chat, on the wall, tell them what happened. Your answered prayer is someone else's hope tonight.
When the answer was not the one you asked for
Sometimes what comes is not what was asked for: a peace instead of a cure, a different door instead of the one you knocked on. It is still allowed to give thanks, and it is often the moment people mean it most.
A prayer you can say
Lord, you heard me. When I was afraid I asked, and you answered: (say what happened).
Thank you for the people who prayed with me, most of them strangers. Let me now be one of them for someone else. Keep me grateful when things are easy, the way I was faithful when they were hard. Amen.
For this day, for this breath, for the people in this house: thank you. Amen.
How to pray it
- Say the prayer, and say the specific thing you are thankful for.
- Tell the people who prayed with you. On the wall, mark your petition answered and write what happened.
- Light a candle for someone else who is still waiting.
